I received an email to check out the song Ballrooms of Mars by Marc Bolan of T-Rex. The lyrics are quite interesting. How did Bolan know in 1972?

Could Bolan be describing those who are ‘Dancing with the Devil’? He wasn’t sure about Alan Freed but confident ‘Bob Dylan knows’ and ‘John Lennon knows your name’. In light of Dylan’s 2004 interview with 60 Minutes and The Lennon Prophecy in 2008 – It appears Bolan, in 1972, knew of an association between Dylan and Lennon with the one who can “pull the strings that change the faces of men.”

In 2004, Bob Dylan was interviewed by 60 minutes correspondent Ed Bradley, towards the end of the interview this exchange occurred:

Bradley: “Why do you still do it? Why you still out here?”
Dylan: "Well it goes back to that destiny thing. I made a bargain with it, you know, long time ago, and I'm holding up my end.”
Bradley: “What was your bargain?”
Dylan: "To get where, um, I am now.”
Bradley: “Should I ask who you made the bargain with?”
Dylan: “With, you know, with the chief, the chief commander,"
Bradley: “On this earth?”
Dylan: "In this earth and in a world we can't see."

There appears to be and edit in this part of the interview. When Dylan says, “Well it goes back to that destiny thing. I made a bargain with it…,” it sounds like he was going to say, “I made a deal…”, but there is an edit: “I made a de.. (edit) bargain with it long time ago.” I wonder what the original tape shows?

But when asked by Bradley who he made the bargain with Dylan said ‘the chief commander’. His answer seemed bittersweet. Had he been referring to God it would have been easy for him to just say ‘God’, but he didn’t. Dylan had mentioned God earlier in the interview when asked about his relationship with the media, he said, “I realized at the time the press, the media, they’re not the judge - God’s the judge. The only person you have to think about lying twice to is yourself or to God. The press isn’t either of them and I just figured they’re irrelevant.” So his answer to holding up his end of the bargain was not with God but rather ‘the chief commander’.

Some might say his bargain was with God. However, God does not make deals or bargains with individuals but prefers covenants with large entities. Service to God is one-sided. God does not assume any obligation and does not seek anything for himself. He simply requires what is in the best interest of the individual. On the other hand the Devil is happy to deal with the individual and insists on formal and reciprocal contracts with rights and duties meticulously formulated because he wants something for himself, something that is detrimental to humans. The Devil sees only the individual and will make a bargain when it is in his best interest. The idea of entering into a bargain with God (an agreement between parties settling what each shall give and take or perform and receive in a transaction) particularly for material things wealth, fame and legend is false. But when entering into a bargain with the Devil you are on firm ground! It can be said the chief commander or lord on earth is Satan!

So how did Bolan know about John Lennon in 1972? This is a video of Ringo Starr and Marc Bolan from 1972. ‘Ballrooms of Mars’ was released on the T-Rex album Slider in 1972. During this time Ringo was spending a lot of time with Bolan, playing music and working together on the movie ‘Born to Boogie’. Maybe Ringo provided Bolan with information about John Lennon and then he used it in the song ‘Ballrooms of Mars’. Who knows what rock stars talk about when the stage lights dim and the music stops.

There is an underlying darkness in the song Ballrooms of Mars. I believe Bolan may be describing those who are ‘Dancing with the Devil’.

Demonic Possession and Exorcism

“This is a story ripe with religious overtones.”

It was through the act of demonic possession that Satan used Mark Chapman to collect John Lennon’s soul. Mark’s pastor, the Rev. Charles McGowan from Chapel Woods Presbyterian church in Decatur, Georgia, USA, commented after visiting Chapman in prison, “I think spiritual forces of darkness distorted his whole world view—almost whispering to him that this was God’s ordained plan for him to take this evil out of the world. And I attribute that to the devil himself quite frankly.” Mark continually refers to ‘the spiritual matters behind Lennon’s murder’. It is a story that goes to the heart of the Christian faith, one man tempted by self fulfillment and the gains of the material world would stop at nothing to obtain his dream, makes a pact with the devil, all his wishes granted, he is now owed to the Devil. The Devil finds a vehicle to obtain John’s soul in the possession of a child.

As a child only a few months old, Mark had signs of deep agitation within him as though he placed into this world laden with an ancient grudge. As an infant, his body would violently and involuntarily shake and rock, back and forth at times so severe the casters had to be removed from his crib to prevent it from rolling across the room. His mother recalls the rocking behavior carried on into his teenage years. “He would just be rocking back and forth all the time” she said. As a teenager Mark felt the presence of an evil spirit residing in his body. One night while sleeping at a friend’s house he sensed the presence of evil giving him instructions, “Everyone was lying, passed out in bed...There was a knife in the room.... Something in me -I recognize now to be a spiritual force -was trying to urge me to pick up the knife and kill my friends.” There were periods of demonic activity throughout his life and at times Mark was unable to distinguish God’s directives from those of Satan. But in the months prior to Lennon’s murder the demonic activity reached its peak and Chapman opened doors that could not be closed – he began praying to Satan for help. He prayed for the strength of a weak individual to perform a cowardly act. He prayed to Satan to send his most powerful, experienced demons, ‘not little ones but big ones to do a big thing’. And he believed his prayers were being heard and answered. From Let Me Take You Down, by Jack Jones, page 183: “At last he sat before the record player, naked except for a pair of headphones clamped across his skull:”

“Hear me, Satan,” he prayed softy, bowing his head. “Accept the pearls of my evil and my rage. Accept these things from deep within me. In return, I ask only that you…”
He paused, lifting the headphones momentarily from his head to assure himself that his wife was still asleep behind the closed door in the next room. A chill passed through his body.
“I ask only that you give me the power,” he continued, rocking gently in time to the Lennon song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” that had just begun to trickle into the headphones.
“…..The power to kill John Lennon. Give me the power of darkness. Give me the power or death. Let me be a somebody for once in my life. Give me the life of John Lennon.”

Chapman fixated on the Lennon song lyrics he believed to be blasphemous. In his anger and rage, his wife Gloria said she would hear him in the next room calling out in a loud voice, ‘you bastard phony’, ‘your days in this world are numbered’. “The goddamn phony fool he doesn’t even realize that soon he’s going to be dead. Just imagine that.”

From Let Me Take You Down by Jack Jones:

“In the months after he killed John Lennon, Mark David Chapman was evaluated by numerous psychiatrists. Each describes Mark’s case as one of the most difficult to diagnose. Mark appeared to his psychiatrist, Dr. Goldstein, ‘to have an even higher sensitivity than most people to moral issues and social concerns in general. He had a clear understanding of the relationship between past actions and their future consequences.’ Dr. Goldstein concluded, “Whatever Chapman’s reasons for killing the rock superstar, those reasons were part of a complicated riddle that lay beyond the realm of modern psychiatry as she knew it.” The profession community has struggled to penetrate and describe the medical symptoms of a spiritual battle that Mark Chapman says raged within him for his entire life.”

In 1987, People Magazine ran a three part series on Chapman and talked about his ‘psychotic breakdown’ and ‘exorcism’.

“As the guards at Rikers Island reported it, he destroyed a TV set, threw a radio and began taunting fellow inmates in a high pitched voice that warned of horrible tortures awaiting them in hell. Guards quickly subdued him and locked him in his cell, where he ripped off his clothes and began jumping around wildly, climbing the bars and ‘screeching and hooting like a monkey.’ He tore his bible into small pieces and used them to stop up his toilet. As his cell flooded, he began throwing water at the guards and taunting them. When they opened his cell door he lunged at them, and it took six men to drag him into a van that took him to Bellevue. There he did not answer to the name Mark Chapman, he spoke to the doctors in voices they had not heard before – on a high pitched, female voice, the other low, snarling and aggressively male. The voices identified themselves as Lila and Dobar, emissaries of Satan. It was Lila’s first possession of a human, Chapman later told his co-counsel, David Suggs, and she was struck by the weakness of human vision and the human body. Dobar was the more powerful demon – thousands of years old, exceedingly well versed in biblical scripture and a member of the Supreme Council in Hades, a ruling body whose power was only exceeded by Satan’s. Chapman noted, however, that Lila had the power to release and contain Dobar; he thought perhaps this was because Satan didn’t trust him. He said that both demons could read his mind and that their purpose in possessing him was to make a showing of Satan’s presence in the world, using Lennon’s murder as a vehicle.”

In his jail cell at Attica State prison in New York, his demons were excised. Mark was instructed to pray, and that God would flood him with peace and prepare him for the expulsion. He was told to pray for his wife and kin (priest) and suddenly God began to deliver him from 5 or 6 demons.

“They came out. I ended up on the floor, groaning and making sounds and language very strange to me…” Chapman said. Mark said he didn’t want people to believe it was a mental act and asked “will you try to believe it? I was pacing in my cell, and my body was shaking, and all of a sudden I felt the Holy Spirit come down and say there were demons inside me, and I said, ‘So that’s what this is,’ and I asked in Jesus’ name for them to come out. My face was snarling and it came out of my mouth, this thing, and it was gone. And I relaxed, and then I started breaking out in a sweat. Then there were more, I said, ‘In Jesus’ name, come out, and the second one was worse. Then the third one came out, and it was worse, and I said, ‘I’m ready, God, lets get them all out, let’s go.’ During that hour six came out. They were the most fierce and incredible things you ever saw of or heard in your life – hissing, gurgling noises and different voices coming right out of my mouth. My body was twitching an I was praying, I remember saying – this was the last one, and I said, My body is the temple of the Lord, and this voice came out and said, ‘This the body of Satan.’

As the demons left his body, Mark said he felt the essences of his personality departing with them. Mark said, “In other words, the way I was acting – cursing and things like this – weren’t me, and when they came out I could sense these things coming out of my mouth, hissing and awful gurgling and grinding and I could feel that part of my personality was gone.”

FINNEGANS WAKE May 4, 1939

Seventy-two years ago, on May 4, 1939, the book Finnegans Wake by James Joyce was published, about a year and a half before the birth of John Lennon. In celebration of its publication and mysterious verse we toy with a few of the words, and there are many.

(1) Have you heard of one Humpty Dumpty - John Lennon, The Eggman, taken from his song I am the Walrus. In the song John uses the phrase, Goo Goo Goo Joob, supposedly taken from James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (557): "googoo goosth" – and reportedly, the last words spoken by Humpty Dumpty before falling off the wall.

(2) How he fell with a roll and a rumble - how John Lennon was murdered.

(3) By the butt of the Magazine Wall – Mark Chapman believed John Lennon was a phony. When he read the November 1980 Esquire Magazine article titled John Lennon’s Private Life: A Madcap Mystery Tour by Laurence Shames he was convinced beyond doubt of John’s phoniness. Chapman had just traveled to Georgia, USA to pick-up 5 hollow point bullets from a friend. As he boarded a plane from Atlanta to NYC and took his first class seat, in the magazine rack directly in front of him was the Esquire Magazine with John Lennon’s picture featured prominently on the cover. The publication and content of the article could not have been more timely, its convenient, unavoidable placement in the seat pocket directly in front of him, left Mark a captive audience on his faithful trip back to New York. This was no coincidence. Shames’ went in search of the Lennon “who always took chances, musically and politically; the man of appalling honesty who shamed the world into examining itself -the truth seeker; the man of peace and love; the radical rock and roll revolutionary; the political activist; the man who spoke out in favor of women, gays and everybody poor; the conscience of the age.” But what he found instead was “a 40-year-old businessman, who watches a lot of TV, whose got 150 million dollars in the bank and lawyers who squeeze him through the many tax loopholes.” Shames’ found mansions – 4 of them and still others; one on Long Island, Cold Springs Harbor; another ocean front Palm Beach Florida estate; he found land he purchased in Upstate New York Catskill Mountains – 16,000 acres. He found a yacht, swimming pools and hundreds of Holstein cows, one of which sold for $265,000. The story was harsh criticism and judgment of the working class hero. The bold print on the lead page asked the same question circulating in Mark’s mind, “John Lennon, Where Are You?” It seemed the man of antiestablishment had wholly and heartily joined the establishment and was living a comfortable life in the 28 rooms he owned in the exclusive Dakota Apartments. The article completely confirmed the image Mark already held in his mind to the phoniness of John Lennon. The big phony was living a self-centered life in his luxury apartment in New York and for this he must die.

(4) He was one time our King of the Castle – Mark Chapman was King of an imaginary Kingdom of Little People that lived in the walls of his house in Decatur, Georgia. It was there the Little People first appeared to him while listening to the album Meet the Beatles. When the Little People heard the music of The Beatles, Mark sang them the song Little Child changing the words to Little People and they chanted, “Mark the King of music, Mark the King of the Little People, Long live the King of the Little People.”

(5) Now he's kicked about like a rotten old parsnip – How Chapman is hated worldwide.

(6) And from Green street he'll be sent by order of His Worship - Chapman grew-up and spent most his life on Green Forest Drive in Decatur, GA, USA.

(7) To the penal jail –Chapman was sentenced to Attica State Prison in New York State for the murder of John Lennon – jail him and joy.

(8) … and immaculate contraceptives for the populace – John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Finnegans Wake has been described as a locked-box, a Celtic Knot. Irish writer James Joyce said his books were not to be taken as mere books, but as acts of prophecy. He said Finnegans Wake was the interpretation of “the dark night of the soul.” To his critics who said the work was a waste of his genus he responded, “Perhaps it is insanity. One will be able to judge in a century.” Finnegans Wake is an Irish puzzle. Joyce spent 17 years writing it and considered it his greatest work. Interesting, the neighborhood in which Chapman grew up was full of Irish street names: Irish Lane, Shamrock Drive, Kilarney Road, Galway Drive, Dublin Drive, and Bellgreen Way, Chapman lived on Green Forest Drive.

He Beetles Backwards

Backward masking is a sound recording technique in which a sound or message is recorded backward onto a recording that is meant to be played forward. Backmasking is a deliberate process. It was made popular by the Beatles, specifically John Lennon. In his book “Take a Walk on the Dark Side: Rock and Roll Myths, Legends, and Curses (page 170-71), R. Gary Patterson describes:

“It is appropriate that we begin with the Beatles. After all, they were the first to introduce the technique known as backward masking. It was during the recording of “Rain” that John Lennon first became inspired to try a backward vocal track. Lennon mentioned to David Sheff in The Playboy Interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, “I got home from the studio and I was stoned out of my mind on marijuana and, as I usually do, I listened to what I recorded that day. Somehow I got it on backward and I sat there transfixed, with the earphones on, with a big hash joint. I ran in the next day and said, ‘I know what to do with it, I know … listen to this?’ So I made them play it backward. The fade is me actually singing backward with the guitars going backward. ‘Sharethsmnowthsmeaness.’””

The technique used by Lennon in the song ‘Rain’ was an intentional reversal. There are other reverse messages in Beatles material that are unintentional – phonetic reversals. It was the Beatles backwards that sparked the worldwide phenomenon Beatles’ death clues (Paul-is-Dead). Backmasking and phonetic reversals have been deemed demonic and Satanic by some. It is another John Lennon generated phenomena.

Beatlemania - 50 Years Ago

Why the mayhem started and why it was occurring around The Beatles is a question asked from the very beginning of their success. What could possibly explain the rapid, spontaneous, widespread worldwide overreaction to the Beatles? Nothing before or since comes close to equaling the emotional epidemic surrounding the Beatles. Girls went to their concerts and wept uncontrollably; they covered their ears and screamed at the mere sight of the Beatles. Boys as well were lured by their charm. Their audiences were described as hypnotic, spellbound, transfixed and in ecstasy in their presence. The hysteria and mania they evoked left the world dumbfounded. Everywhere they traveled they created bedlam. Their lives were the center of a continuous unrestrained uproar.

The media continually pressed them for an answer:

New York City, February 7, 1964. Q: "What do you think your music does for these people?"

Washington DC, February 11, 1964. Q: "Tell me this. Why do you think you're so popular all of a sudden?"

Melbourne, Australia, June 14, 1964. Q: "In view of the fact that you've had so much experience now with crowd hysteria, are you still at a loss to put your finger on the reason why?"

Q: "Can we ask you to amplify the point, how this hysteria generates? Nobody seems to be able to put their finger on a reason why. It seems to be a combination of things. What do you believe it is?"

New York City, August 28, 1964. Q: "As seriously as you can, how do you account for the type of reception you get?" PAUL: "We can't account for it, you know. We..."

Q: "It's been going on for quite a few months now. You must have some ideas about why people like you."

Chicago, Illinois, September 5, 1964. Q: "Will you tell us why you think you are so popular?"
JOHN: "We don't think about it. We get asked that, you know-- somebody asks us that every day, and we've no answer."

An answer to the question of why? Had John Lennon entered into a 20 year pact with the Devil for wealth and world fame, to become bigger than Elvis Presley, to become legend, we know when it ended, Monday, December 8, 1980 (Liverpool time: Tuesday, December 9, 1980). If we go back 20 years from the time of his death and ask the question, “Did anything unusual occur in Beatles’ history in December of 1960?” This would mark the beginning of a 20 year pact.

On Tuesday, December 27, 1960, The Beatles played the Town Hall Ballroom in Litherland, Liverpool. On this night they evoked a response from the crowd noticeably different from anything in their past. The response was so unusual it was documented in their history ‘Beatles’ Anthology’ and described in Mark Lewisohn’s book ‘The Complete Beatles Chronicle (page 2). On the night of Tuesday, December 27, 1960, “As the curtains shuffled open and Paul launched himself into Little Richard’s ‘Long Tall Sally’, everyone suddenly and spontaneously crushed forward to the front of the stage, swept away by the group’s sheer magnetism.” The Beatles “were an absolute powerhouse, creating an inexplicable and unprecedented frenzy among the spellbound teenagers.” It was said that following this single night performance, The Beatles never looked back. What happened the night of Tuesday, December 27, 1960, when the sudden ‘magnetism’ and ‘unprecedented frenzy’ broke out among what was described as ‘spellbound teenagers’? Nothing in the Beatles past compared to the crowd response on this night. It was before any single hit record and before wide national attention. Suddenly, it was as if a spell was set to their music and the Beatles became a hit.

By the end of 1963 all of Great Britain was under their spell. Great Britain was witnessing a phenomenon like never before seen. John deemed the British success as local attention and inadequate. Liverpool, London or all of Great Britain for that matter, weren’t enough for John, he wanted the entire world. After their Liverpool, Empire Theater concert on Saturday, December 7, 1963, John called his friend Pete Shotton and asked him to meet him at Mimi’s house. When Pete arrived he found John had left to his Aunt Harrie’s house. It was there he found John, with his backed turned digging through a cabinet of his personal belongings, collecting some old books and papers he said he wanted to take with him to London. Pete said that evening John talked excessively about his desire for riches and world fame and his desire to become legend. He talked about the recent success of his band, the ‘screaming mobs’, the ‘getaway limousines’ and celebrities they were meeting. He talked about the girls he was screwing in the dressing rooms and how at each concert their road manager Mal Evans would select the ‘most ravishing ticket holders’. It was a small taste of the things John desired most. That night, Pete described how John went on and on about America. “America, America, America” he repeated again and again, like an incantation.” “Now if I can just get America, I’ve got the f…ing world.” (Pete Shotton, In My Life, page 78). Pete specifically describes John’s words as an incantation: a formula used in ritual recitation, verbal charms or spells to produce a magic effect. In just a few weeks John Lennon’s incantation was answered. Within days, Brian Epstein received a call from Ed Sullivan in America.

U.S. Newspaper headlines from 1963:

“The Royal Family are the latest to fall victim to Beatlemania, the mysterious wave of hysteria which is sweeping Britain…”

“The thought of U.S. teen-agers becoming Beatle Bewitched is frightening.”

By the end of 1964, well, you know the rest of the story - Beatlemania encompassed the globe.

In 1970-71, John was asked by Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone Magazine: “What accounted for your great popularity?”

John’s response left no wiggle room: “Because I f..king did it…” he said. “Even London was something we used to dream of, and London's nothing. I came out of the f..king sticks to take over the world…”

The Beatles were good but were they that much better than the Rolling Stones, The Kinks or Led Zeppelin? In Adelaide, Australia, in 1964, an estimated 300,000 people pooled outside their hotel room! John likened the crowds to the type Hitler attracted. In some videos you can see him performing the Nazi salute to the crowd.

What started on Tuesday, December 27 (2 + 7 = 9), 1960, ended on Tuesday, December 9, 1980 (Liverpool time).

Latter-Day Druids

American writer Jean Shephard travelled with the Beatles during their 1964 British tour and described Beatlemania:

“I joined the Beatles in Edinburgh in the midst of a wild, swinging personal appearance tour they were making throughout the British Isles. The first glimpse I had of them was in a tiny, overheated, totally disorganized dressing room backstage between their first and second shows. I had taken the night flight up from London and suddenly found myself face to face with one, or rather four, of the 20th Century’s major living legends. All of them looked up suspiciously as I walked in, then went back to eating, drinking and tuning guitars as though I didn’t exist. Legends have a way of ignoring mere mortals. I looked hard at them through the cigarette smoke, and they began to come into focus, sprawling half-dressed and self-involved amid the continuous uproar that surrounds their lives. They had been playing one-night stands in Glasgow and Dundee, and I went with them from Edinburgh to Plymouth, Bournemouth and half a dozen other towns. They were all the same: wild, ravening multitudes, hundreds of policemen, mad rushes through the night in a black Austin Princess to a carefully guarded inn or chalet for a few fitful hours of sleep. And then the whole cycle started all over again. It became impossible to tell one town from another, since to us they were just a succession of dressing rooms and hotel suites. The screams were the same. It all assumed the ritual quality of a fertility rite. Latter-day druids, the Beatles sat in their dressing room – a plywood Stonehenge-surrounded by sweaty t-shirts, trays of French fries, steak, pots of tea, and the inevitable TV set; while from somewhere off beyond the walls of the theatre came the faint, eerie wailing of their worshipers, like the sea or the wind. But the Beatles no more heard it than a New York cop hears traffic. Totally oblivious to the mob and to the honks and plunks of other Liverpudlian rock n rollers warming up down the hall, they sat sipping their Scotch from paper cups and watching “Dr. Kildare” on the telly. I, meanwhile, sat and watched “them” and wondered why. In two years they had become a phenomenon that had somehow transcended stardom – or even showbiz. They were mythical beings, inspiring a fanaticism bordering on religious ecstasy among millions all over the world. I began to have the uncomfortable feeling that all this fervor had nothing whatever to do with entertainment, or with talent, or even with the Beatles themselves. I began to believe they were the catalyst of a sudden world madness that would have burst upon us whether they had come on the scene or not. If the Beatles had never existed we would have had to invent them. They are not prodigious talents by any yardstick, but like hoola-hoops and yo-yos, they are at the right place at the right time, and whatever it is that triggers the mass hysteria of fads has made them walking myths. Everywhere we went, people stared in openmouthed astonishment that there were actually flesh-and-blood human beings who looked just like the Beatle dolls they had at home. It was as though Santa Claus had suddenly shown up at a Christmas party. Night after night, phalanxes of journalists would stand grinning, groveling, obsequious, jotting down the Beatles’ every word. In city after city the local mayor, countess, duke, earl and prelate would be led in, bowing and scraping, to bask for a few fleeting moments in their ineffable aura. They don’t give interviews; they grant audiences, which is the way the world wants it legends to behave. All around them, wherever they go, shimmers a strange, filmy, translucent pal of palpable unreality, so thick that you can almost taste it. And at the center of this vast cloud of fantasy are the four young men themselves, by far the most real and least enchanted of them all. They have managed somehow to remain remarkably human, totally unlike the kewpies created by fandom and the press. In real life, the Beatles don’t make Beatle noises. Nor are they precocious teenagers. They are grown-up, Scotch-drinking men who know what the world expects of them – which is to be Beatles and to wear long hair, funny clothes and be cute. But all that stops when the curtain falls and the high-heeled shoes come off and the drums are put away. Their unimaginable success – which has made them world figures important enough for the prime Minister and the Queen’s consort to discuss in news conferences, and has made them without a doubt the most successful money machine in recent times – has left them faintly bemused, but also extremely guarded in their everyday life, almost as though they’re afraid that an extra loud sneeze will burst the bubble and they’ll be back in reality like the rest of us.”

This year the song Imagine will be sung by British singer Taio Cruz in New York City’s Time Square New Year’s Eve celebration just before the ball drops. The album Imagine was released on September 9 (9th month; 9th day), 1971 (1 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 18; 1 + 8 = 9) of a 9 year. John Lennon admitted the song was "an anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic song, but because it's sugar-coated, it's accepted." But not everyone accepted it. When it was released in 1971, Mark Chapman had just gone through a religious conversion and had become a ‘Jesus Freak’. He told his friend Miles McManus that Imagine was a communist song and that Lennon’s message ‘imagine a world with no heaven or religion’ was blasphemy. Mark grew up in the southeastern US Bible belt, Decatur, Georgia, and still held John’s ‘more popular than Jesus’ statement in contempt. He said, “Who the hell are they to compare themselves to Jesus.” Chapman would play the song Imagine on his guitar and sing, "Imagine John Lennon is dead!"

I like the song Imagine, but it is ‘flaming pie in the sky’.

The widow of John Lennon asked rather more, in the memory of her late husband, than some of us are willing, let alone anxious, to give, however much we regret the tragic circumstances of his passing. John Lennon was a source of inspiration to many people (including my son), and as has wisely been counseled, it is unwise to insert oneself in other people’s religious quarrels. But Yoko Ono asked not merely that Lennonites celebrate Lennonism, but that all of us do. You see, Yoko wanted the whole world – every radio station, in every country – to sing out, at a given hour, the song, “Imagine.” Nominating it in effect as a kind of international anthem. Now I do not know the melody of “Imagine,” but I have the lyrics in front of me, and what it amounts to is a kind of bible, as written by the sorcerer’s apprentice.

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today.

I venture to say that those who imagine in that direction ought to make every effort to restrain themselves. The homilies of John Lennon have a hard time up against those of Christ, who speak the words, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things that God hath prepared for them that love him.” It is quite difficult to understand Lennon’s point in wishing that all that life stand for is the present moment, today. And the notion that there is only sky above us suggests a kind of ethereal; vapidity that is downright depressing. And what are we to say about the word “heavenly” if heaven doesn’t exist? It is hard to say the song gets worse, because there is hardly anything worse than to think that John Lennon is a mere memory, rather than a companion of the angels. But the second verse asks us:

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace.

Well, we certainly want to imagine a world in which everyone lives in peace, but you see, that is only possible in a world in which people are willing to die for causes. There have been peace for heaven knows (assuming heaven existed) how long in the South, except that men were willing to die to free the slaves, and Hitler would have died maybe about the time John Lennon did, at Berchtesgaden, at age 91, happy in a Jewless Europe. There have got to be reasons that even affected John Lennon to prefer one country over against another. I happen to know this to be the case, since a long time ago he asked me to help him with papers permitting him to live in the United States, rather than in Great Britain. More?

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world.

No, thanks, I don’t want to imagine a world in which Yoko doesn’t possess the goods that John left her, with which possessions she in capable of exercising a great deal of charity, though no so profusely as to leave her penniless, and a public charge. The person who invented heaven passed along a commandment ordaining that one must not covet other people’s goods and most thoughtful social philosophers agree that property is an important basis, indeed, probably the most important basis, of human freedom. So it goes, and the chorus of “Imagine” is, well, it is too subversive to appear in a family newspaper.

Sgt. Peppers Album Cover OVERSIGHT?

James Joyce appears on the cover of the Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album but not officially recognized by The Beatles. March 30, 2010 marks the 43rd anniversary of the Sgt Pepper album cover photo shoot. On the evening of Thursday, March 30, 1967, The Beatles assembled at Chelsea Manor Studios in London for the photograph. The cover was designed by Peter Blake and includes a collage of people, many selected by The Beatles themselves. There has always been wonder as to who the people on the cover are. In June of 1987, The Beatles released the Sgt Pepper album CD (“it was 20 years ago today” anniversary edition). Along with the CD was a 28 page booklet. On page 2 of the booklet is a black and white drawing of the album cover and numbers denoting persons and items included on the cover. On page 3, under the title, “The crowd assembled…..” is a list of 87 persons and items. Why was James Joyce excluded from the ‘official list’ when his picture is recognizable on the cover? The Lennon Prophecy explores a mystical connection between James Joyce, Finnegans Wake, John Lennon and The Beatles. Joyce’s picture on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper album only strengthens that association and it’s rather curious why he is not officially recognized by The Beatles. But apart from the Joyce-Lennon theory, Dublin born James Joyce, on the cover of the Sgt Pepper album, deserves recognition.

A resent photograph of Paul McCartney is featured on the cover of his latest video release Good Evening New York City. I found it to be strikingly and strangely similar in composition and color to that of a photograph taken of John Lennon during The Beatles 1965 Shea Stadium concert. The shot of Lennon with arms stretched wide and head held back looking to the heavens was taken at a time that might best be described as the apex of his career. Even more, the photo documents that exact moment in time when Lennon went from being just another entertainer to a living legend; a legend that came to the realization that all of his worldly desires had been exceeded when in describing the event was quoted as saying, “I saw the top of the mountain.” John also said the noise at Shea was “louder than God.”

Why such an uncanny photograph of McCartney would be employed if not only for the purpose of invoking the memory of what resulted for Lennon at Shea.

This picture of Paul, John and Ringo was taken in New York City’s Central Park during The Beatles first visit to the United States on February 8, 1964. Some years ago I noticed something strangely ominous about the shot.

Much in the same way the Paul-is-Dead clues diverted attention
from the real story behind The Beatles death clues, here once again
we see Paul throwing attention away from what should be the true
focus of the picture, The Dakota Apartments with John directly in the
foreground. The Dakota Apartments would be the site of John’s
murder some sixteen years later.

"Revolution 9" was recorded for the White Album in May 1968. Opening words spoken in the song prove to foretell the date and the events of Tuesday morning, December 9, 1980 (Great Britain time). "number nine, number nine, number nine" When played backward, phonetically can be heard as "turn me on dead man" The reverse clip maintains a most fiendish tonal quality almost commanding. "turn me on dead man, turn me on dead man, turn me on dead man." "Turn me on dead man" is undeniably similar to the lyrics "I'd love to turn you on" from John's "A Day in the Life".

In one of John Lennon’s last compositions he sings a remorseful petition to the Lord. One can almost sense the anxiety expressed for what he had done and for what lie ahead in his not so distant future. The song is titled, “Help Me to Help Myself,” first released 20 years after his death on the Double Fantasy CD, October 9, 2000. John sings about being hounded by the Angel of Destruction; how in his heart they [the Lord] never really parted, and how he was never satisfied.

Like many of those who enter into a pact with the Devil they are aware of their allotted time, and as the time of the pact draws to a close, they begin to feel remorse, and start looking for a way out of their fatal pact. In this final song we hear John pleading with the Lord, “I’m asking this question in the hope that you’ll be kind, please help me Lord, help me to help myself.” In the song John uses the old adage ‘the Lord helps those who help themselves’. Was he hoping for a way out of his pact?

Eerily, if you listen closely, in the final moments of the song John can be heard talking to himself in a faint voice, saying, “I see, that’s how you’re going to do it, Huh, ok.” What could John possibly be talking about, “That’s how you’re going to do it,” DO WHAT?

John Lennon, "The first backward tape on any record anywhere." When 'Rain' was released as a single, the U.K. advertisement used the 'butcher cover' photograph to promote the record. It was an eerie combination: crumbled baby-doll bodies depicting infanticide, blood and raw meat, together with words and music played backward. Backwardness, is commonly associated with demons and the occult, whether it be in fiction, literature or fringe religious practices. Ringo Starr later commented, "I think it's the best out of all the records I've ever made. 'Rain' blows me away. It's out of left field. I know me and I know my playing, and then there's 'Rain'." In Beatles Anthology he said, "The drumming on 'Rain' stands out for me because I feel as though that was someone else playing - I was possessed."

HAVANA (Reuters) – The man who banned the Beatles from the communist-run island's radio and television stations has died, state television said on Tuesday.

Jorge "Papito" Serguera, who at the time was president of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television, pulled Beatles music from the airwaves in the 1970s even though he later admitted he enjoyed listening to it in private.

Serguera, who was 76 when he died, said in a 2001 interview he was following orders from high government officials who viewed the British band's music as a threat to the revolution. Reuters Full Story

John Lennon comes to life in a TV commercial for One Laptop per Child [OLPC], a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help provide every child in the world access to a modern education. The video broke nationwide on Christmas Day.

The 30-second spot, called "A Message from John Lennon," is part of OLPC's campaign to fund the delivery of its XO laptop computers to children in the developing world. In the spot, Lennon, through the use of digital technology, speaks to viewers about the potential impact of XO laptops on these children. "Imagine every child… could access a universe of knowledge… a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want… You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world," says a video image of Lennon.

More than 40 years after Christians were infuriated by the Beatles' claim that they were "more popular than Jesus", the Roman Catholic Church has made peace with the Fab Four.

Saturday's edition of the Vatican's official newspaper absolves John Lennon of his notorious remark, saying that "after so many years it sounds merely like the boasting of an English working-class lad struggling to cope with unexpected success".

In a lengthy editorial marking the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' famous White Album, L'Osservatore Romano heaps lavish praise on the British band.

"The talent of Lennon and the other Beatles gave us some of the best pages in modern pop music," said the newspaper, which has recently tried to shake off its stuffy image by covering popular culture events such as the Oscars and inviting articles from Muslim and Jewish contributors.

Only "snobs" would dismiss the Beatles' songs, which had shown "an extraordinary resistance to the effects of time, providing inspiration for several generations of pop musicians", said the newspaper, regarded as the Vatican's official mouthpiece.

It was in March 1966 that Lennon made his infamous claim.

"Christianity will go," he told a reporter from the Evening Standard.

"It will vanish and shrink We're more popular than Jesus now - I don't know which will go first, rock and roll or Christianity. Jesus was alright, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me." The boast provoked outrage, particularly in the United States, where conservative Christians burned piles of Beatles albums. The band received death threats and radio stations, particularly in the South, stopped playing Beatles records.

More than a decade later Lennon said he was glad of the furore he had caused. "My life with the Beatles had become a trap," he wrote in 1978.

"I always remember to thank Jesus for the end of my touring days; if I hadn't said that the Beatles were 'bigger than Jesus' and upset the very Christian Ku Klux Klan, well, Lord, I might still be up there with all the other performing fleas! God bless America. Thank you, Jesus."

Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” and “Revolution No. 9,” which Niezgoda reveals is in itself a step-by-step preview of his actual assassination. Lennon’s alleged anti-Christian behavior as well as famous declaration that the Beatles were “Bigger than Jesus” are also presented as evidence of a possible pact. The single "(Just Like) Starting Over" was released a month before John Lennon died. The corresponding music video opens in a room containing some of John's most valuable possessions: Rickenbacker guitars and a Vox amplifier, amongst scattered pictures from his past. The camera scans the scene and momentarily stops on a shelf containing the James Joyce book Finnegans Wake.
